As the foundation gradually solidifies, AI PC shipments are expected to grow further in the second half of 2024.

According to the latest data from Canalys, in the second quarter of 2024, shipments of AI-enabled personal computers (PCs) reached 8.8 million units, accounting for 14% of all PC shipments in this quarter.

These devices refer to desktops and laptops that include dedicated AI workload chipsets or modules (such as NPUs). Canalys notes that with the support of AI PC roadmaps from all major processor suppliers currently progressing smoothly, device availability and end-user adoption rates will significantly increase after the second half of 2024.

By brand, Apple has the highest AI PC shipment volume and product portfolio share with its entire Mac lineup, which currently has the highest shipment volume and share of AI-enabled PCs.

In the Windows domain, AI-enabled PC shipments grew by 127% quarter-on-quarter. Lenovo, the world's largest PC supplier by shipments, has increased its share of AI-enabled Windows PC shipments to around 6% this quarter, with a 228% quarter-on-quarter growth, by entering PCs equipped with the Snapdragon X through Yoga Slim 7x and ThinkPad T14s. HP achieved about an 8% share of AI-enabled PCs in its Windows shipments. Dell's AI-enabled PCs account for nearly 7% of its Windows shipments.

Canalys Chief Analyst Ishan Dutt said, "The second quarter of 2024 has added tremendous momentum to the expansion of AI PCs. In June, the launch of the Copilot+PC, which uses Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips based on the ARM architecture, although the shipments this quarter were relatively small due to limited supply time and limited geographic coverage, the broad commitment of Windows OEMs to include these products in their portfolios is a good omen for the prospects of this category. In the x86 field, Intel has increased the delivery of Core Ultra chipsets, reporting strong performance in its AI PC products in a row, while AMD announced the launch of its Ryzen AI 300 series notebook processors in June, which will start to be released in mid-July."Dutt added: "Now that the foundation has been laid, shipments of AI-supported PCs are expected to grow further in the second half of 2024. Processor suppliers and OEMs will target a broader customer base with new product categories at more price points. Meanwhile, channel partners have also shown a preference for AI-related features in PCs. A survey in May showed that nearly 60% of respondents said they expected customers to favor devices with a Copilot key. According to Canalys' forecast, the market performance of AI-supported PCs is basically in line with expectations, and the industry is still expected to ship about 44 million units in 2024 and 103 million units in 2025."

AI PCs are undoubtedly a hot topic in the current PC market. With the launch of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X platform, AI laptops have sparked a market craze for the first time. Looking forward to the second half of 2024, the upcoming release of AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Lunar Lake indicates that the popularization of AI PCs will further accelerate. These PC devices based on AI technology are expected to significantly change the market landscape due to their excellent power consumption performance and performance optimization.

PC devices based on the ARM architecture, especially Windows on ARM devices, performed particularly well at the end of the second quarter of 2024. Compared with the mainstream x86 architecture, these devices demonstrated significant power consumption advantages, bringing a new competitive dimension to the market. In the next few years, the cooperation between MediaTek and Nvidia will promote the development of the next generation of AI PC devices based on the ARM architecture. It is predicted that by 2027, PC devices based on the ARM architecture will account for more than 25% of the market share, posing a serious challenge to traditional x86 architecture manufacturers.

The current low demand in the Chinese market, but Lenovo still maintains a leading position in the global market with a strong market foundation and innovation capabilities. It is worth noting that despite the weak performance of the Chinese market, the overall market recovery can still continue, which shows the strong momentum of the global PC market recovery.

As of the second quarter of 2024, the recovery trend of the global PC market brings new thinking space for investors. The development of AI PCs is not only a symbol of technological innovation but also a reflection of the diversification of market demand. Investors can pay attention to the market trends and product layout of several major manufacturers to capture potential investment opportunities. Especially in the field of AI PCs, the chip technology iteration and market response of companies such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm will become important reference indicators.

It is worth noting that in 2024, the emergence of AI PCs will take the productivity and creativity of computers to a new level, and there will also be opportunities to create some "brand new" interaction methods. At the same time, it is also necessary to see that more devices are still in the "AI Ready PC" stage, and only industry cooperation and soft and hard coordination can accelerate the arrival of "AI on PC."

The development of AI PCs cannot be separated from the support of the entire ecosystem. In the future, PC manufacturers will pay more attention to cooperation and collaboration with software developers, content creators, and other related industries. By establishing a complete ecosystem, it provides users with a richer and more diversified service experience. At the same time, the ecosystem will also promote innovation and technological progress, driving the sustainable development of the entire industry.
